The project will employ SES's patented Wiretx RFID tag, which does not require an energy source such as a battery and features a flexible antenna on the outside of the label. The company did not explain how the Wiretx tag is powered.

Istanbul-based Kordsa will contribute its materials technology to apply the tags into the tires before the curing process.

Prototype sampling is scheduled for the third quarter.

"We believe that RFID technology is an important step in the transition to connected smart tires that will add value to all stakeholders, especially the end user, in the tire value chain," Burak İlgün, Kordsa market development project manager and RFID project manager, said.

RFID technology is predominantly used by tire makers for traceability of tires from production to end-of-life.

The data provided by RFID technology can provide further operational efficiency for manufacturers, OEMs, distributors and fleet management within the automotive industry.
