The perfect crafty final touch to a present Gold Paper Plates

How to make gift bags from leftover wallpaper for birthday presents

There's nothing more special than making a gift for someone using one of your favourite crafts – so why not go one step further and make a lovely paper gift bag for it to go in, too?

These bags are really easy to make and don't require any previous crafting experience, making them perfect for beginners.

These gift bags are made from leftover wallpaper – make in a size just large enough to contain a small jam jar filled with a posy of flowers to give as a gift. They're the perfect gift bag for Mother's Day presents, or for a little something for a special friend.

This project is a great way to use up leftover wallpaper from decorating your home, but if you don't have any lying around, any coloured card will do – just be mindful of the weight, as it needs to be heavy enough to stand up as a bag. We love a floral print for a pretty finish – especially if the bag is holding a bouquet of flowers for your mum.

1. Use an existing gift bag as a template, undo the sides and draw out the shape onto a length of wallpaper.

2. Use special craft scissors to cut a scallop-edge across the top of the bag before folding the sides and bottom to match the original bag and secure in place using double-sided tape.

3. For the handles, make two holes at the same place on the back and front of the bag (you may need to reinforce the paper here with tape or extra card placed over the areas where you are to make the holes) to loop a length of ribbon or ric rac through, leaving a length at the tops to create a handle.

4. Cut small rectangles of coordinating paper and punch a hole at the top to thread onto to the ric rac as a matching gift tag.
