SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Puerto Rican flag flies over Springfield City Hall for the 33rd year in observance of Puerto Rican Heritage month.

The Bilingual Veterans outreach center of Massachusetts presented a stirring event with the raising of the Puerto Rican flag at City Hall. The flag raising honorees included State Senator Adam Gomez, who’s father Gumersindo Gomez is a Vietnam Veteran, head of the Veterans Outreach Center in Springfield.

“It feels great, it feels amazing to see the community come out, but to also encourage our folks to go out there and get involved in the electoral process on Election Day, and for some reason it always falls before Election Day,” said Adam Gomez.

So many members of the Puerto Rican Community attended the flag raising including Vietnam Veteran Heriberto Flores, President of the New England Farm Workers, “I think this is good to celebrate the city, this is a wonderful city. The Italians, or the Irish, or the French, or the Jewish… It’s important to recognize that we’re here.”

The event first began on November 19, 1989, when then-Mayor Mary Harley declared the week of November 19th the Puerto Rican week in Springfield.
